Bass Heading To The Beds Just In Time For Anglers Choice Double-Header On Kerr

Kerr reservoir is primed for some of the best bass fishing of the season just in time for the Angler Choice Invitational Team Trail double-header tournament this weekend, said tournament director Chris Lucas.

“I fished down there last weekend and you could catch fish however you wanted to fish,” Lucas said. “The key was the guys who could find a good kicker to go with their limit.”

Lucas weighed in 29.19 pounds to take 4th place in the Bass Federation National Championship. It took over 30 pounds for both days to win, he said.

“There were 111 boats and the first day they weighed 495 fish, which means every team but two had fish and most those teams had a limit. There were a lot of fish caught and brought to the weigh-in.”

And Lucas, said, if you think that was good it should be even better this weekend for the Anglers Choice double-tournament weekend.

“I think the fish are going on the beds and the sight fishermen will have a ball,” he said. “Some fish were caught on the beds this past weekend, but I don’t think the big wave was up yet.”

Lucas said the water is almost out of the bushes, but there is enough water on the bushes that the fish are in 1-foot depths.

“If they are there you can catch them, so there will be plenty of targets to throw at unless they pull water a foot or two by the weekend.”

Topwater will be good, spinnerbaits will be good if the wind is blowing, and flipping will be good, he said, so anglers can fish to their strengths this weekend.

The Kerr weekend will be the midpoint of the of the 2015 season under the new single-division, two classics format.

“When we joined the B.A.S.S. Toyota Team Championship Series we were only recognized as one trail by them,” Lucas explained. “Basically, we had to have one points system, so we don’t call it the North Carolina Division and Virginia Division anymore. The guys who fish on Saturday and the guys who fish on Sunday, all the points go to the same standings.”

And this is a critical weekend for the standings, he added.

“Things are heating up for the B.A.S.S. Team Championship race. The points are going to be tight and we have a boatload of people coming to fish.”

Lucas said the schedule is set up so there are two tournaments in Virginia, which are held on Smith Mountain Lake, and two tournaments in the Carolinas where the dealerships are located – in Lexington and Spindale – one on High Rock and one on Lake Hickory.”

The other tournaments are held on the border, with two double-tournament weekends on Kerr Reservoir, he noted.

“An angler can make one trip, fish Saturday and Sunday and get two qualifiers in while saving money. That Kerr tournament weekend will be our biggest draw of the year,” Lucas said. “And if you plan on launching at Occoneechee, come early so we can get the boats out at 7 o’clock.”

The remaining Anglers Choice Tournament schedule includes: April 18 and 19, Kerr Reservoir; May 2, Smith Mountain Lake; May 23, Lake Hickory; June 6 and 7, Kerr Reservoir; with the Ranger Classic Oct. 3-4 on Kerr Lake and the Triton Classic Oct. 17-18 on High Rock Lake.
