Chuck Chapel Tournament Provides Christmas To The Underprivileged

The memory of the late Chuck Chapel, a well-known and admired August, Ga., marine dealer, lives on in the eyes of hundreds of children who have a Christmas each year that would not have been possible otherwise.

Proceeds from the annual Chuck Chapel Memorial Tournament on Clarks Hill Lake go to the Angel Tree at Journey Community Church in Evans, Ga., said Jon Hair, co-owner of The Tackle Shop which sponsors the tournament.

“We’ve given Christmas to around 400 families in the past four years,” Hair said. “We have give between $1,700 and $2,000 every year to the Angel Tree, which provides Christmas to underprivileged families.”

Hair said the annual tournament was started to honor the local marine dealer who died unexpectedly of a heart attack several years ago.

“Chuck Chapel owned Lakeside Marine and we decided to honor him by holding a tournament that gives to the Angel tree program,” he said.

Hair said the 5th Annual Chuck Chapel Memorial Tournament will be held Saturday out of Wildwood Park, with $5,000 guaranteed to the winner.

“We have several different sponsors who provide the money for first place and we pay one place for every 10 boats, and our payout is very good right down the line,” he said. “We generally get 80 boats or so and if we do that is $8,000 to be split between 10 places.”

Entry fee is $110, which includes $10 for the Big Fish Pot. Registration is 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at The Tackle Shop, 4009 Columbia Road.

Hair and Will Hardy, a professional angler on the FLW Tour, opened The Tackle Shop in January 2013 to sell the custom lures made by their lure company, Greenfish Lures, along with other fishing tackle.

“We make custom tackle – spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, jigs, Shakey Heads. We make specialty lures for fishing around here, like our Square Rubber Jig, and we hand-tie swim jigs like our Skipping Jig,” Hair said.
