Lsu-Shreveport Team Finding Bass Shallow In Somerville Lake For Flw College Tournament

The Louisiana State University-Shreveport fishing team of Jared Roscoe and Christian Brown spent their first day of practice Wednesday on Somerville Lake near Brenham, Texas, for the FLW College Fishing Southern Division 2016 opener on the lake Saturday.

After one day of practice on the lake they were still looking for a pattern that could consistently put fish in the boat.

“We spent half the day trying to find something out deep, but we could never put anything together out there,” said Rascoe of Stonewall, La., a junior majoring in secondary education. “We did catch a couple of keepers up shallow, so we are moving around to see if we can find a pattern shallow.”

Rascoe said the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers impoundment on Yegua Creek in the Brazos River basin is “a pretty open lake. There is really no timber or anything like that. Just reeds along the shore. We have not found any grass.”

He said he and Brown, a junior petroleum engineering major from Pelican, La., plan to spend Thursday and Friday fishing both deep and shallow in hopes of developing a productive pattern.

“We’ll probably spend a little bit of time on the west end of the lake to see what is going on there and then we’ll spend some more time out deep to see if we can find something worth fishing out there. But right now it looks like the majority of our fishing will be up shallow,” he said.

Rascoe and Brown are teamed up for only their second tournament together. Last year Rascoe teamed with J.P Kimbrough for a pretty successful collegiate fishing year.

“We placed 7th at the Bassmaster Wild Card and we were 11th at the Carhartt Bassmaster National Championship on Lake DuBay out of Stevens Point, Wis. Our lowest finish for the year was 19th so we had a really good year.”

The tournament Saturday on Somerville Lake is the first of three regular season stops in the Southern Conference. A full field of college teams will be competing for a top award of $2,000 and a berth into the 2017 College Fishing National Championship.
