Outcome of BFL Hoosier Division tournament on Ohio River will depend on how much rain falls

Fishing in the third FLW Walmart BFL Hoosier Division tournament on the Ohio River July 11 is going to depend a lot on the weather, specifically whether the river is swollen from more heavy rains or not, according to veteran BFL angler George Brown of Camby, Ind.

“A lot will depend on whether the water gets back down, whether it will let the river come into play or not,” Brown said. “If we get more rain and it stays up and high it probably will be pretty tough fishing. But if it goes back down and the water clears up I think there will be a pretty good weigh-in.”

The tournament probably will be won on a shallow bite in the creeks, he said, but there are some big spotted bass to be caught in the river if conditions are right.

“On a typical day I would be fishing the main river, trying to get five spots and then head back down towards the dam, hitting the creeks,” he said. “There are several small creeks coming into the river with a lot heavy wood cover and real shallow flats. If the sun comes out and the wind gets up the fish will pull up on those flats.”

And, he added, if the water clears up there should be some spawning fish in those creeks because the spawn has been somewhat delayed by the up and down water levels created by the heavy rains in recent weeks.

“In the river, hopefully I can catch them on a crankbait on shoals and wood if there is a little current, and on a small worm. In the creeks I’ll be pitching a Strike King Game Hog and throwing a spinnerbait,” he said.

Brown finished 6th in points in the Hoosier Division last year and he is currently second in points after finishing 7th in the first tournament April 25 on Lake Monroe and 17th in the second tournament May 30 on Lake Patoka.

“I have the same points as the leader (Lee Mills of Columbus, Ind.) but I am pretty sure he has more fish and that is the tie breaker,” Brown said.

After the tournament on the Ohio River out of Tanner’s Creek July 11, the Hoosier Division will move to the Ohio River out of Rocky Point Aug. 1, then back to Tanner’s Creek for the season final Sept. 12.
