Peek Leads Rayovac Championship as field is cut for final round

Richard Peek of Centre, Alabama, brought a five-bass limit to the scale Friday weighing 18 pounds, 5 ounces to grab the lead after day two of the Rayovac FLW Series Championship at Wheeler Lake. Peek now holds a 2-pound, 14-ounce lead heading in to the final day of the three-day event, hosted by Florence/Lauderdale Tourism, that features 140 anglers from across the country casting for a top cash award of $50,000 plus a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard if Ranger Cup qualified.

Right behind Peek in second place is veteran pro Chris Baumgardner of Gastonia, North Carolina, who has a two-day weight of 10 bass worth 28-6 as the tournament heads into the third and final day of competition.

“I was pretty much a phone call away from not even coming to the tournament,” said Peek, whose wife is due to give birth to the couple’s first child this weekend. “But, I decided to come on over and I’m glad I did.

“It’s all about timing right now,” Peek, who just finished his rookie year on the Walmart FLW Tour. “Yesterday I had a good flurry at about 1 o’clock, and I caught three of the fish I weighed-in in that window. Today it happened around 10 a.m. and it was over by 11 a.m., but I caught four of my keepers in six casts.

“The places I’m keying on have a lot of laydowns and structure for them to get in,” Peek continued. “It is all close to creek channels and bends, and I think when the fish pull up to feed you catch them.

“Today, the wind got up after lunch,” Peek added. “I don’t know if I’ll even be able to fish some of my places tomorrow because the waves might be too big.”

Despite the possibility of the wind wreaking havoc with his areas, Peek said that he was optimistic that with fewer boats on the water Saturday he would be able to take advantage of more of his secondary areas to catch fish.
