Points On Line For Adults And Youths In Collins Marine Tournament On Falls Lake

The Collins Marine Bass for Cash Series has two tournaments left in the regular season with points titles on the line in both the adult series and its youth series counterpoint – the Youth Educational Series (Y.E.S.).

The next to last tournament of both series will be held Saturday on Falls Lake where fishing has been red hot all year long and the regular season final will be held July 25 on the Roanoke River.

The Optional Points competition in the Bass for Cash Series has the 2014 championship team of Steve Vann and Richard Lewis with a slight lead over the second place team of Sammy Creech and Jeff Jones. Skeet Bennett and Buster Seabolt hold down the third position while Larry Hipps and Dean Lairson fill the fourth spot. In the fifth position is the duo of Abe Gaeta and DJ Mysilinski.

After the Roanoke River tournament, the adult series will hold a championship Aug. 15-16 on a site to be determined from the waters fished during the year in a blind draw at the final tournament. The Y.E.S. season will end with the Roanoke River tournament in July.

Nothing has grown faster in the outdoors world in recent years than the current youth movement in bass fishing, from the college level down to high schoolers – and even younger.

The Collins Marine Bass for Cash Series in North Carolina launched the Youth Educational Series this year and organizers could not be more happy with the way it was accepted. In this unique series, dedicated solely to youth anglers 18 years old and younger, the youth tournaments are held in conjunction with the Collins Marine Bass for Cash tournaments.

“It’s the first year and I have been happy to have 8 to 10 boats on average in the youth tournaments,” said Jeff Narron, tournament director. “We are having 16 to 20 kids come out and fish in each tournament and we are really excited about that just out of the gate with the series.”

The main thrust of the Y.E.S. series, he said, is to get young anglers to come out and participate in the events. Basically, he said, there can be two youths 18 and under on the boat with an adult boat captain who does not fish.

“That’s why we have no membership fees and no entry fees associated with the youth series. It is 100 percent free. The intent of the program is to give these young angels the opportunity to get out on the water and learn valuable skills and gain knowledge from their adult boat captain.

“The youths are doing all the casting, lure selection, etc. on their own. It provides a more level playing field since they are fishing against other youth anglers.”

Some $700 in awards, plush trophies for first and second place and the lunker fish are given out at each Y.E.S. tournament, Narron said. The awards, all donated by sponsors, include tackle the youths can use for fishing, including tackle bags, hooks, lures and other fishing gear.

The Y.E.S. points champions will be determined at the Roanoke River tournament, he noted, with the youth team winners receiving trophies and customized fishing Jerseys created just for them.

Four teams are in contention for the Y.E.S. points title – Alden Patterson and Logan Jennings, Tyler Little and Chase Crocker, Wyatt Long and Travis Beck, and Chris Chavez and Ethan Howard.

“We have a tie for first place in the Y.E.S. Series,” Narron said, “and only three points behind them is another tie for third place, so it’s a four-way battle for the championship with only two events left.”
