Teams Will ‘dredge The Ledges’ In Flw College Central Conference Tournament On Kentucky Lake

B.A.S.S. pro Edwin Evers won the Zippo BASSFest on Kentucky Lake last weekend by “dredging the ledges” and Nick Uebelhor of Evansville University hopes to do the same this weekend in the FLW College Fishing Series tournament.

“The fish are out on the ledges, but I am finding it’s hard to get them to bite,” said Uebelhor during practice this week. “They just held BASSFest here and all those guys were catching them in 20 feet of water. Some of the fish are moving out there and some are already out there, so they are scattered out right now and all that fishing pressure is making it tough to catch them.”

Evers weighed in more than 97 pounds for the four days of BASSFest and his catch included some 8-pounders, but Uebelhor said he is mostly finding 3-pound bass.

“I’ve found some schools of bass but I need to find more,” Uebelhor said. “With all the fishing pressure I think the more schools I can find the better it will be. I’ll probably spend a lot of time looking at my Humminbird depth finder during practice this week.”

Uebelhor said he is fishing “typical ledge stuff.”

“I have about 9 or 10 rods n the deck, rigged with crankbaits, worms, jigs and so on.”

Uebelhor and teammate Lee Knies, both of Jasper, Indiana, won the FLW College Fishing Central Conference tournament on Table Rock in April, but they have split up for this tournament to get more of their school fishing club members some experience, he said.

“We had already qualified so we thought we’d get a couple of other people involved that don’t normally fish tournaments and see how they enjoy it,” he said. “We only have two boats in the club and usually when we go to a tournament we can only take one boat. Since this tournament is so close we thought we would take both boats.”

While he has found the fishing a little tough so far this week, Uebelhor, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering, and Knies, a sophomore majoring in Electrical Engineering, are both familiar with Kentucky/Barkley Lakes.

“It’s only 3 ½ hours from home. It’s where we go to fish when we can’t catch any fish in Indiana,” he said.
